BACKGROUND

Indonesia officially holds G20 Presidency for a year starting from December 2021 until the G20 Summit in November 2022. The G20 Presidency carries the theme: “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”.  The theme encourages the whole world to work together to recover, be more robust, and continue to carry out sustainable development after being hit by the Covid-19 Pandemic. Under the Indonesian Presidency, the Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG) will focus on sustainable recovery, both on land and at sea, and resource mobilization to support environmental protection and climate change mitigation and adaptation. The central issues discussed are:

  • Biodiversity, in particular, initiatives to develop a Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, ecological restoration, marine ecosystem protection, IUU fishing, marine protected areas in Antarctica, and Osaka Blue Ocean Vision.
  • Marine waste.
  • Efficient use of resources, and
  • Circular economy

Ocean health and sustainable fisheries are the main focus of the maritime sector in the Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group (ECSWG)-G20. The blue economy policy that prioritizes the prosperity of the people through the management and utilization of the sea that considers ecological resilience and economic resilience is a fundamental matter and urgently needs to be fought for. The blue economy policy is in line with the priority programs of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries for marine management, such as rehabilitation of coastal ecosystems, disaster mitigation, climate change adaptation, conservation management. Food security based on marine biodiversity, sustainable aquaculture fisheries, and measurable fishing are the right policies for post-Covid-19 recovery efforts. This is in line with EMBRIO’s mission of Understanding, Protecting, Rehabilitating & Sustainable Use of Indonesia’s Marine Biodiversity for Future Human Well-Being.

EMBRIO-Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, IPB University in collaboration with the Maizuru Fisheries Research Station, Kyoto University, Japan; Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Tohoku University, Japan; Agency for Marine and Fisheries Research and Human Resources, Ministry for Marine Affairs and Fisheries (BRSDM-KP, KKP); BIONESIA (Biodiversitas Indonesia); Indonesian Ichthyological Society (MII), Indonesia Fisheries Processing Community (MPHPI), Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies (PKSPL)-LPPM IPB will hold a scientific event named International Seminar on Marine Biodiversity, Utilization, Conservation and Management (MarBioUtiCoM) with theme “Bolstering the Health of Our Ocean and Ensuring the Sustainable Use of Marine Bioresources” on August 8-9, 2022.
